Sexual orientation is not consciously chosen. Rather, it is discovered gradually as particular encounters are valued and pursued. The point is, that there are early life experiences which encourage a person more in one direction than another. While there are many routes leading to obligatory homosexuality, parental influences are highly influential. As emphasized earlier, in many cases, there is no parental culpability, while in others, there clearly is. The critical nature of affectional bonds and/or their absence or loss is valid and highly relevant. The books referred to earlier should be read in order to have a credible understanding of this complex, multi-faceted topic.
Whatever their source, Edward Sagarin, hailed as the father of the American gay revolution, was confident that homosexual compulsions would remain with a person until their last breath. However, after studying sociology , he changed his mind. This life-long gay man had gained new information and became convinced that homosexuality was a pathological adjustment which issued primarily from family problems encountered during early childhood. He explained:
What are these predisposing influences? In all my discussions with homosexuals –– including those who are attracted exclusively or predominantly to the same sex –– one observation has been almost universal, and that is the lack of a well-balanced home, where the mother and father displayed affection for each other and for the child. Broken homes, divorces, early deaths, frigid parents, unequal love –– one pattern or another can be found in almost every instance.
My objective is simply to share information that could be enlightening and helpful regardless of one’s orientation. There is nothing to be gained through gay or straight bashing. Men have been harmed too much in the past. I do hope to cast some light on different factors that can contribute to the evolution of same-sex preference and behavior together how and why it is resistant to change. I will begin with a glance at apparently innocuous factors and then consider reports where parental culpability is obvious.
There is more than one determinant. A mix or constellation of antecedent factors together establish compulsive homosexuality.
